What is Mobilizing Faith Communities?

This program seeks to engage faith-based youth groups in the fight against hunger and poverty in the Southern Tier.

Within the Food Bank of the Southern Tier's network of over 160 member agencies over 80% of these organizations are faith-based. Beyond this, many or our volunteer groups come to us from local churches committed to service.

The Mobilizing Faith Communities project is a multi-lesson ecumenical curriculum that draws on Scripture to explore the compelling call to Christian communities to join the fight against hunger and poverty. This curricula series is focused on youth; however we also offer adult programming utilizing the Just Neighbors curriculum. Just Neighbors is an interactive multimedia curriculum whose purpose is to help your congregation assist their neighbors who are living in poverty and advocate for them.

Which Faith Communities Does This Program Target?

Mobilizing Faith Communities curricula is geared toward Christian communities of faith. Each lesson also includes a Catholic Social Teaching supplement that is specifically targeted toward Catholic congregations, reflecting the Food Bank’s role as a regional agency of Catholic Charities. Jewish communities will find some elements of the curriculum useful. We deeply respect and recognize the immense efforts across diverse faith traditions to address social inequality. The Christian focus of our Mobilizing Faith Communities program reflects the demographics of our community. We warmly welcome any group who is interested in building a similar set of lesson plans around hunger and poverty from the perspective of their faith tradition to contact us!

How Do I Schedule Mobilizing Faith Communities or Just Neighbors Workshops?

If you are interested in having your group participate in the Mobilizing Faith Communities Program, please contact the Community Engagement Coordinator to schedule a workshop series. Alternatively, community members are invited to become trained as a Food Bank of the Southern Tier “Community Educator.” These Educators are a key part of our strategy to expand the reach of our programming. Go the Community Educator site to learn more.
