The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is committed to helping members of the community understand the complexities and root causes of hunger and poverty.

The main workshop offered through the Food Bank’s Community Education program is Hunger 101, an interactive, age-appropriate workshop that explores the realities of hunger and poverty in our community.

Our Workshops

Understanding Hunger is our gateway programming for people to learn more about hunger in our communities.

This workshop begins with a discussion about poverty and food insecurity, then moves into a simulation where participants role-play members of a fictional community. They are then challenged to secure enough food for their families utilizing community resources.

*Understanding Hunger is for those age 16+ and best suited for those who have not experienced food insecurity, as it may be triggering for those who have.*

Where does all that food come from? How are my donations optimized? Learn the answers to these questions and more. This workshop explains the food bank industry, and how the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and its network opartners operates.

Learn how to educate and effectivelcommunicate with your elected officials at all levels of government in an impactful wayIncludes an opportunity to role play a meeting with an elected official to boost confidence! This is great for individuals as well as organizations that aren't sure of the rules around advocacy as a 501c3 non-profit organization.

Explores the history of policies through the present day that have created the racial wealth gap that plagues our communities still today.
